Mt Hanang Nature Forest Reserves

“Acclimatization Site to Higher Altitudes”

The reserve contains Mount Hanang with altitude of 3420 meters above sea level making it the fourth highest mountain in Tanzania after Kilimanjaro, and Lolmalasin mountains making it a popular spot for acclimatization to mountain climbers. The reserve has an area of 5,871ha. Mount Hanang is an extinct volcanic mountain situated in Katesh town–Manyara Region.

TOURIST  ATTRACTIONS                                                         
The reserve is a fascinating eco and cultural destination due to presence of a number of cultural, historical and heritage sites like Barbaig and Iraqw sacred areas, view of Gendabi salt lake, the endemic mole-rat (Fukomys hanangensis), Himiti waterfalls, closed forest, historical caves, chameleon and variety of bird species.

ECOTOURISM  ACTIVITIES                                                              
The reserve has multi eco and cultural touristic activities such Traditional Dances, traditional accessorizing, visiting Sacred Sites, Local Brew Tasting, Trekking, Mountain Climbing,   Nature Viewing, Bird Watching, Forest Walks and Photographing. Sight viewing of the Great Rift Valley and caves as you ascend to Mount Hanang peak.

ACCESSIBILITY
Accessibility to the area is by road either from Dar es Salaam via Dodoma and Manyara (about 800 km) or from Singida town (about 159km). Visitors arriving at Kilimanjaro International   Airport can proceed to the reserve, about 270 km via Arusha City.

Other tourist attractions near the Reserve are; Kondoa Rock Art Paintings, Essimingor Nature Forest Reserves, Tarangire and Lake Manyara National Parks.

ACCOMMODATION

The reserve owns camping facilities. Other accommodation facilities can be secured in the nearby hotels at Katesh and Babati as townships.
